EmailPointer for Outlook Web: A Faster Way to File Emails to SharePoint
Code-backed product preview · Version 0.2.4
The email is already open. Its permanent home should be one move away.
EmailPointer is a Manifest V3 side panel that works beside Outlook Web. It captures the selected message context and brings Recent, SharePoint/Teams, OneDrive, and Outlook destinations into one Microsoft 365 filing tree - so the user can choose the right destination and act without rebuilding the context somewhere else.

The browser changed. The filing habit didn’t.
Important email still gets trapped between “I’ll do it later” and “Where did we put that?”
The inbox is personal
A decision can be visible to one employee and effectively invisible to the project, client, or operations team that needs it.
The handoff is clumsy
Download, rename, switch tabs, browse libraries, upload, and then hope the destination was the right one.
Later becomes never
When filing interrupts the work, people defer it. Shared context disappears while inboxes become unofficial repositories.
A shorter filing loop
Keep the message, the filing decision, and the destination in one field of view.
Open each step to see how the implemented extension connects Outlook context, Microsoft Graph destinations, and an explicit user action.
01Stay in contextOpen beside Outlook WebUse the browser action or Ctrl+Shift+E while the selected email remains visible.+
The Outlook content script identifies the live message context and keeps it available to the side panel. The user does not have to reconstruct the subject, message, and purpose after switching applications.
Implemented controlSelected-message context follows the filing action
02Connect the workspaceBootstrap Microsoft 365 profilesMicrosoft sign-in can add SharePoint/Teams, OneDrive, and Outlook profile roots.+
Profiles turn recurring project, client, case, mailbox, and operational locations into recognizable starting points. The side panel can browse the hierarchy below a profile rather than forcing the user to rediscover it for every filing action.
Implemented controlSaved roots with folder-level navigation
03Find the targetBrowse, search, or return through RecentA pinned Recent section, scoped search, and profile sorting shorten the trip to the right location.+
EmailPointer is also a finding surface. The tree can expose SharePoint libraries and folders, OneDrive content, and Outlook folders, while Recent remembers items that were opened or uploaded.
Workflow gainLess path retracing and fewer destination guesses
04File intentionallyDrop or send to a chosen destinationTarget a profile root or nested folder and let the extension prepare the email artifact for that user-requested action.+
EmailPointer is designed around deliberate filing - not invisible background collection. For Graph-direct filing, the message can remain an .eml artifact; an optional Windows helper can convert supported email artifacts to .msg when that deployment posture is chosen.
Control pointThe person chooses what moves and where
05Keep controlUnderstand and recover the outcomeStatus, retry history, conflict recovery, open/copy/cut/paste, and folder creation make the result actionable.+
Duplicate names, authentication issues, stale selections, or changed destinations should produce a clear next action. The current build includes conflict handling, diagnostics, recent activity, and familiar content operations instead of relying on a silent upload.
Workflow gainMore confidence before and after filing
What the 0.2.4 code contains
Closer to a compact Microsoft 365 filing workspace than a single-purpose upload button.
The current build connects Outlook-aware capture, Microsoft sign-in, Graph-backed browsing, reusable profiles, artifact handling, and familiar content operations inside an adjustable side panel.
See whether your team is a pilot fit ↗Outlook-aware capture
Resolve the live selected message and drag context instead of asking the user to locate the same email again.
One navigable tree
Reuse SharePoint/Teams, OneDrive, and Outlook profile roots, then browse to the nested destination that fits the work.
Artifact-aware filing
Prepare email and attachment payloads honestly, including visible .eml or supported .msg outcomes.
Everyday control
Use Recent, search, sorting, conflict recovery, themes, diagnostics, and a 50% to 150% display scale.
The extension is in active development and Chrome Web Store preparation. Optional local Windows filing exists in the code, but whether it belongs in the first public store build is still a product and release decision. Final permissions, public features, and availability remain subject to QA.
